Andy becomes Jim's emotional support which turns out to be a prank by Jim. In " Heavy Competition," Andy offers bargain deals for Jim's and Pam's wedding and interprets Pam's rejection of Jim's ideas as Pam being controlling of Jim. When Kevin seeks dating advice from others in the office, Andy gives him romantic advice that appears to reflect his own experiences with Angela, telling him to never give compliments, push for physical contact, or be assertive to the point of rudeness. Īngela's affair with Dwight and her broken engagement with Andy affect Andy's perspective on relationships. Andy cancels his wedding plans and Dwight throws out a bobblehead in his own likeness, symbolizing the end of their relationships with Angela.
After Andy confronts Dwight and challenges him to a duel, they realize that Angela has lied to them both about having slept with just one of them. When Dwight is preemptively named regional manager by Michael, who is confident that he will be promoted, Andy is named assistant regional manager. When Andy returns from anger management training later in the season, he accompanies Jim to a meeting with clients at a local high school, where he unexpectedly sees his girlfriend and discovers that she is a student there. Though Michael initially takes a liking to Andy, he soon becomes agitated by Andy's sycophantic attitude and poor salesmanship. After the Stamford branch merges with the Scranton branch, Andy attempts to gain favor with a manager, Michael Scott, and has a brief rivalry with his coworker, Dwight Schrute.
